Founder and leader of the Progressive Peoples Party Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom has sharply disagreed with President John Dramani Mahama on an assertion that 99% of children are in school.

President Mahama in a live radio interview Wednesday said the massive investment in education by the NDC government has elevated the quality of education in the country and one of the significant achievements is the high enrolment of children in schools. President Mahama said about 99% of children are in school today. This according to the President is as a result of the enormous investment made by government in education.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom said President Mahama is wrong in his assertion because the situation in rural areas completely defies his assertion.

“With all due respects to my friend John, he is wrong. This is not happening in Drobo, Elmina, Bukom, Fante New Town, Ayigbe Town, Essikado, or Tolon. I agree with him that the best legacy we can give our children is to make sure that they have a good education. But it will not happen if we do not make education our number one priority. Education cannot be left as a subject for slogans during election times” he wrote.

Dr. Nduom suggested that the only way to better the quality of education in Ghana is to implement the free compulsory basic education as the constitution demands. He noted that “Our Constitution demands free compulsory universal basic education so that is the law. President Mahama just needs to implement and follow what the law of the land demands. He swore to uphold and defend the Constitution of the Republic”.

He prevailed on the President to implement the Free, Compulsory Universal Basic Education policy so that every child can have the opportunity to live a good life in the future.
