Deputy Communications officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Fred Agbanyo, has said calls by the country’s biggest opposition party for a new voters’ register is a scheme to get minors registered for the upcoming General Elections in their strongholds.

The New Patriotic Party led by its Presidential running mate, Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia Tuesday sent a petition and evidence of the bloated nature of the current voters’ register to the Electoral Commission and called for a new voters’ register before the next election.

But speaking to Albert Azongo on A1 Radio’s flagship program, the deputy communications director of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Fred Agbanyo asserted that the NDC is kicking against NPP’s call because it  had done its research and has come to the conclusion that the NPP wants to register minors as they did before the last election.

“We have done our research and we know that the NPP is making this call because they want to register minors. You know before the last election, the NPP used to make their supporters vote for five and eight times but because of the biometric, they cannot perpetrate such crime hence their call for a new register so that they can register minors.”

He explained that the NPP before the last general elections registered minors, and that they have set out to register other minors to vote for them in the upcoming elections.

“The problem we have is that the NPP is calling for a new voters’ register in order to register minors who are of the age 17, 15, 16. They know if the register is opened, they can register these minors to vote for them but if it is not opened these minors cannot vote for them.”

He noted that the NPP is trying to use their collaborators in the media, their friends in the clergy and people in the civil service to push this call down the throat of every Ghanaian but the NDC will reject it on every ground.

Meanwhile, a deputy communications director of the New Patriotic Party, Maame Afia who also spoke to Azongo Albert lauded the call of the NPP.

According to her, the 2012 general election saw massive over-voting at the various borders of the country because at the towns along the various borders had the total number of votes been more than the number of registered voters hence the need for a new voters register to check all these electoral malpractices.

She mentioned that the former electoral commission boss till date could not give the total number of registered Ghanaians who live in foreign countries therefore the need to have a new register to ensure that the next election is not rigged.

She expressed her shock at the fact that president Mahama supported calls for a new voters’ register in Togo but his own people are refusing to accept the fact that the country needs a new voters’ register.

She promised that the NPP is working to bring to light other nationals from other neighboring countries other than Togo that have been registered in Ghana.
