Retired educationalist, Robert Ajene, has described the falling standard of English language in Senior high Schools in the country as unfortunate.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show Wednesday, Mr. Ajene described the situation as unfortunate and a threat to the desire for higher quality education in the country.

President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Christian Addae Poku disclosed that the quality of English language is deteriorating in the various Senior High Schools in the country. According to him, students often abbreviate words they are not supposed to abbreviate during exams and this his blamed on addiction to social media.

Mr. Robert Ajene added that the cause of this deterioration is multifaceted rather than one-sided. He noted that teachers in Ghana are challenged in many ways including logistics and training in specialty areas so as to make them better qualified to handle some particular subjects.

He mentioned that currently, most teachers who teach the English Language are not people who are trained with the requisite skills and knowledge in the English language.

“Lately, most schools assign teachers who do not have the requisite skill and knowledge in the language, so the resultant of putting square pegs in a round hole is the deteriorating of English language in High schools.”

Mr. Ajene noted that parents to some extent have shed responsibilities to check how much time children spend on social media and watching television.

He added that, apart from using teachers who lack knowledge in teaching of the language, the age of social media should also be blamed for the fall.

“Instead of students using such mediums like Whatsapp messaging, Facebook and other social media communities for positive benefits, it is rather the opposite” he mentioned.
