Reports reaching tv3network.com indicate there were renewed clashes in Bolga on Saturday night, following a long standing chieftaincy dispute which left some houses burnt and properties destroyed.
Residents of the town had to flee for dear life as the situation which started around 8pm with gunshots lasted for about two hours.
Police and Military have taken over the area, arresting one man who fired a warning shot in the presence of the security officers with a locally manufactured pistol.
Several people sustain various forms of injuries some from gunshot and also because they were fleeing in the dark. They are receiving treatment at the surgical theatre of the Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga.
TV3’s Upper East regional correspondent, Rabiu Tanko upon visiting the area of the incident on Sunday morning, saw a number of police and military personnel checking the extent of damage and to ascertain the cause of the incident.
The commanding officer, Airborne at Tamale, Lt Col Joseph Malik Punamane toured the affected houses and appealed to both factions to remain calm and said an emergency security meeting will be held this afternoon for the way forward.
Currently there are two chiefs from two gates in the Bolga traditional area. One was enskined by the Nayiri and the other was enskined by the elders of the traditional area.
Supporters of the two chiefs have caused trouble in the last few years. The chieftaincy dispute was taken to court which brought relative calm to the area but tensions escalated against on Saturday night.
It is however unclear what triggered the latest incident but residents say they are living in fear.
