Committee Inaugurated to Help Fight against Mental Illness in UE Region

A Regional Mental Health Subcommittee has been inaugurated in the Upper East region.

The sub-committee is expected to help champion mental health service delivery in Region and also help rid the streets of the region of mentally ill vagrants.

Speaking at the Inauguration ceremony Wednesday, Deputy Director of the Upper East Regional Health Directorate, Mr. Peter Boateng lauded the effort by the Ghana Health Service in fighting mental health illness and any stigma attached to it.

He mentioned that regardless of the stigma attached to the illness, the Upper East Regional hospital has not and will not renege in its efforts to providing the best of care to mentally ill patients in the Upper East Region.

He indicated that prior to the introduction of the mental health act 846; the Upper East Regional hospital was already running an integrated service, indicating their dedication to provide adequate care to mentally ill persons in the region.

He explained that the Upper East Regional Health Service is doing its very best to be able to provide good mental health care of the people and help eradicate mental health problems in the Region.

Dr. Boateng intimated that although the “operation clear the street off the mentally ill” started in the Upper East Region this year, the region had thrived in identifying some fourteen mentally ill vagrants with a considerable number been stabilized and sent to their families to be managed.

“It is also worthy to mention that “operation clear the street off the mentally ill” started last year in our Region. This year a total of 14 mentally ill vagrants were identified and traced (11 in Bolgatanga Municipal and 3 in Bawku Municipal). Follow up was made on them and contact with relatives of three clients was made. Two who were from Bawku were sent home for management whereas the other who was a Burkinabe has been admitted at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital for management.”

He acknowledged that a lot has been done to rid the street of mentally ill vagrants’ but a lot more is needed to be done in this regard.

Dr. Boateng therefore called on all stakeholders to put in a lot more effort into fighting against mental health illness in the region and the country in general.
