Police in Bolgatanga have shot and killed a 30 year old suspected armed robber in a shootout in Dachio, a suburb of Bolgatanga on Wednesday.

Apusiga Atambansi died during a police operation upon a tip off.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East with Azongo Albert on Friday, Upper East Regional Police Commander DCOP Simon Afeku said the deceased who was an ex-convict has been on the police wanted list for several months for various crimes including robbery, unlawful possession of fire arms and violent crimes in the region.

According to him, there was a tip off on Wednesday afternoon that the suspected robber was being kept and treated of gunshot wounds in a hide out at Dachio, a community around Zuaraungu. Upon reaching the house and in an attempt to apprehend him, the suspect opened fire and this culminated in gunshot exchanges with the police.

He added that the wanted criminal has for several months been elusive of the police and all efforts to apprehend him in the past proved futile until Wednesday when he was shot. Checks on his body revealed that he was receiving treatment for bullet wounds on his abdomen.

DCOP Afeku said “If we want to give a background of the notoriety of the suspect then we will not end today. He is an ex-convict and has been in prison several times for various offenses including stealing and violent crimes. If any such person wanted to change then he would have done it long ago. He continued unleashing arm attacks on the streets and residents of Bolgatanga and beyond the region. There has been a bench warrant on him both in and outside the region for violent crimes”

Three other suspects were picked up in the cause of the operation including an aged man who was treating the suspect, the landlord of the house and one who was obstructing the operations of the police. They would be arraigned before court within the shortest possible time.

His body has since been deposited at the Bolgatanga Hospital Morgue for autopsy.
