FDA Calls For Support To Rid The Market Of Fake Products

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has ended a day forum for the general public and the media in Upper East region on counterfeiting and consumer safety as part of its mandates to ensure effective collaboration with relevant stakeholders and empowering the general public with information on counterfeit products and consumer safety.

Speaking at the forum, Upper East Regional Director of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Mr. Zakaria Braima described the forum as a step in the right direction. According to him, a lot of fake products pass through unapproved routes into the region.

Head of Communications at FDA James Lartey said although the Authority is mandated to regulate the production and consumption of food and drugs in the country, it however believes it cannot achieve the clearing of counterfeit products alone without the help of the general public.

Mr. Lartey also encouraged members of the general public to notify the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of any differences and illegitimacies in the food and drug business whenever they come across any in order for the Authority to take an action to prevent the populace from consumption of such unwholesome products.

Mr. Agyeman Duah, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in-charge of Monitoring and Evaluation at the FDA, said the time has come for the Authority to engage the general public and other stakeholders, to flash out fake and counterfeit products which pose a heavy treat the country.

FDA is mandated by law (Act 815, 2012) to solely regulate among other things, the production and consumption of food, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.

He said, there is the urgent need for the FDA to seek support from the public, to address the consumption danger.
