Residents of some communities along the Bolga-Bawku road have expressed worry over the inhalation of dust emanating from a stretch of the road under construction and its associate repercussions including health hazards.

The seemingly angry residents in communities including Asonge, Kongo, Zuo and Nangode say they have been inundated with dust as a result of the scraping of the road which has left them to the mercy of the dust when vehicles speed past on the stretch.

According to them, their rooms and properties have been washed with dust and this has also increased their vulnerability to cough and respiratory infections as most of them now cough and spit out sputum with traces of dust in it. They added that it has become almost impossible for them to dry their flour, foodstuffs and clothing after washing and have resorted to walking over a far distance to dry in houses far from the road.

Director of Ayamfoya Memorial Clinic, a private health facility in Kongo Mr. Thomas Moore told A1 Radio that the facility is recording more cases of diarrhea and respiratory tract infections since the setting in of the dry season due to the incessant inhalation of dust from the scraped road. According to him, people who inhale the dust and have weak resistance automatically develop the respiratory tract infections whiles patrons of food sold by vendors and other residents along the road may likely suffer from diarrhea after eating food that contains some amount of dust.

He also bemoaned the inconvenience and damages the situation has had on the health facility and said “our computers and printers are being blown regularly and we keep opening and closing them and this even causes damages. That is the situation at our facility.”

Meanwhile, checks by A1 Radio at the Regional Highway Authority revealed that as part of the contractual agreement, MAWUMS Constructions, the construction firm constructing the road is obligated to water the stretch of road under construction periodically to prevent health hazards on residents along the construction corridor. This however is not being done.

Upper East regional roads maintenance manager Ing. Archibald Derry said the Authority is logistically constrained and hence unable to monitor regularly works being carried out on some roads to ensure that contractors abide by the laid down agreements and other maintenance regulations. He however assured that immediate steps will be taken to ensure the contractor waters the road regularly in the coming days.

Efforts by A1 Radio to get response from management of MAWUMS Constructions proved futile.
