Trias Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organization has launched a one year Guinea fowl chain improvement project for farmers in the three Northern Regions of Ghana.

The project which is sponsored by Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP) is targeted at three thousand (3000) Guinea fowl farmers across the three northern regions.

Speaking to a1radioonline.com after the launch, country Director for Trias Ghana Mr. Rex Asanga said the project will offer an opportunity to increase the income level of the Guinea fowl farmers as a result of increase in production.

According him, the Guinea fowl is a common bird reared mostly in the three northern regions and has sometime in the country’s history become controversial in the area of marriage and traditional performance.

However he believes Guinea fowl rearing holds a huge potential that could transform and alleviate poverty for millions of rural poor farmers when given the support. He also expressed satisfaction that every rural farmer’s household in the three northern regions can boast of some Guinea fowls not only because the meat is a delicacy but also its cultural value on the people of the savannah.

The one year project which is sponsored by Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP) and budgeted at an amount of 897,899.50 is targeted mainly at the Guinea Fowl Farmers Association(GUIFFA),Northern Region Guinea Fowl Farmers Association(NORGFFA) and Upper West Guinea Fowl Farmers Association(UWGFFA).

The project is in 6 Districts in the Upper East region which includes Kasena Nankana Municipal, Kasena Nankana East, Bolga Municipal, Bongo, Bawku West and Binduri and 6 other Districts in the Northern Region namely Sagnerigu, Tolon, Kumbungu, Savelugu Nanton, West Mamprusi and Tamale Metro. The Upper West Region through the Guinea Fowl Farmers Association will benefit farmers in   3 Districts thus Nandom, Wa Municipal and Wa East.

According to Mr. Rex Asanga, Trias Ghana wants to see sustainable FBOs that are active actors in society, empowering their members personally and professionally especially the poor, women and the young.

He also noted some of the challenges that have bedeviled Guinea fowl rearing as lack of adequate knowledge and skill on recommended animal husbandry practices, not specialized in production of quality eggs, hatching and brooding of kits, growing of adult live birds and meat processing and Value chain supporters such as MOFA and FIs which are constrained in delivering quality technical services.

He also stressed that traders have remained largely unorganized and do not have the capacity to buy, store and transport large number of guinea fowls to their customers. However, their objectives are to increase income from Guinea fowl production in rural households on sustainable basis and as well develop an inclusive and profitable guinea fowl value chain to generate agricultural surplus production and orient it towards remunerative markets.

He also believes the project will contribute to improve livelihood security and sustainability, by making guinea fowl farmers and actors along the value chain become more resilient to seasonal hunger period.
