The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party Nana Addo-Dankwah Akuffo Addo has reiterated his commitment to carry through an agenda of transforming Zongo communities in the country through the Zongo Development Fund and other initiatives when elected President in the 2016 general elections.

The New Patriotic Party in its 2012 manifesto announced its intention to setup a special fund specifically for the transformation and development of Zongo communities in the country.

Addressing hundreds of party supporters at the first NASARA conference in Kumasi on Saturday, Nana Akuffo Addo re-emphasized his pledge to setup the Zongo Development Fund when elected to lead the country.

“In the 2012 campaign, I announced to the country that if, God-willing, I was elected to lead our country, I would do something never done before in our history to tackle the deprived nature of the Zongos. I said an Akufo-Addo government would establish a special fund called the Zongo Development Fund. This fund will be aimed at enhancing infrastructural development in Zongo communities, in order to improve the lives of their residents. I am going to repeat that commitment in our 2016 manifesto, and let me go a step further and assure you that, in office, I will carry out this pledge to the letter,” he said.

According to him, the weak performance of the party in previous elections in the Zongos has been one of the saddest aspects of the party’s life since 1992 while noting that the introduction of the Aliens Compliance Act of 1969 is to blame for the loss of sympathy from Zongo communities. He however expressed optimism of an overwhelming support from Zongo communities in the build up to the 2016 election.

The three times flagbearer of the largest opposition party passionately appealed to all Zongo communities in the country to have confidence in the party and vote massively for the NPP in the November polls.

He said “I am appealing to all of you in Zongo communities, across Ghana, to have confidence in me, and believe that, when, by the Grace of God, the mantle of national leadership is thrust on my modest shoulders, I will lead an honest and capable administration that will turn the economy of our country around, give good governance to our people and restore prosperity to our nation. I am making a further, humble appeal to you. We cannot undo the past. Whatever has happened in the past has already happened. I am, however, urging you to join hands with the NPP and myself so that, together, we can bring about the bright, dignified, prosperous future that I am certain is the destiny of Ghana.”

The First National NASARA Conference was held at the X5 conference hall in Kumasi and is expected to be an annual event that will continuously mobilize support from Zongo communities for the New Patriotic Party.
