The Bawku Municipal Security Council has begun sensitizing citizens to be on the lookout for suspicious strangers and report them to the security agencies. This is part of measures to keep Ghana secure, following the recent terror attack on the country’s Northern neighbors, Burkina Faso. Hoteliers, hospital administrators, transport operators and religious leaders have also been sensitized in that regard.

Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Bukari Issaku disclosed this during the Bawku Municipal Assembly first quarter town hall meeting. He commended the security apparatus in the municipality for their efforts to keep the people safe and advised the citizens to be on the alert. “The security of the municipality has relatively been stable for some time now. Permit me to acknowledged the role of our security agencies and the cooperation of the general public without which we would not have been able to come this far,” he stated.

Bawku divisional police commander, Chief Supt. Lovelace Tefutor Kalesti assured the public of the Police readiness to clamp down on any suspected terrorists.

The town hall meeting forms part of the assembly’s effort to account to Bawku citizens, the progress of developmental work in the municipality. It also offers citizens an opportunity to hold leaders to task.

The MCE in a presentation said the assembly’s financial strength for the year 2015 stood at eight million, one hundred and seventy-six thousand, three hundred and twenty-five Ghana Cedis. According to him, these monies were accrued from the assembly’s internal generation, development partners and central government.

Mr. Issaku out-lined expenditure on the revenue. “We constructed 1 No 3 classroom block each at Gozesi and Kikasing. We also constructed 1 No. 6 unit 2 story staff accommodation and a new 2 story boys dormitory all at Bawku Technical Institute.

According to the MCE the assembly in this year with the support of its development partners will continue to provide educational, heath, water, agriculture and sanitation facilities to better the lives of residents.

The Bawku Municipal Assembly also presented some hospital equipments donated by the United Nations Development Fund to Bawku Municipal Health Directorate.

Upper East Regional secretary of Social Accountability Media Network (SAMNet), Isaac Asare in a presentation said the assembly has failed to create awareness about the town hall meeting hence the low turnout. Mr. Asare stated that the assembly has failed to involve citizens during the planning and implementation of projects.

“Since we got here in the morning I have been asked by so many people what was happening here and I was surprised. So I will encourage the assembly to do more publicity as when there is a program like this,” Mr. Asare added.
