The Youth of Dangweo, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East region have appealed to the regional police command to speed up investigations into the murder of their brother who was said to have been brutally beaten which resulted in his death in a recent chieftaincy clash in Bolgatanga on Sunday, April 3.

Akafari Aloma, a native of Dangweo who had gone to watch a football match at the Bolgatanga sports stadium was brutally attacked by unknown people on his way home after the match had ended on the same day the clashes erupted.

The thirty-four year old was left unconscious and rushed to the Bolgatanga regional hospital but died in the early hours of April 4. The murder was therefore linked to the chieftaincy clash which was brought under control by the intervention of the security service in the region.

Peace has since returned to the area but the youth of Dangweo are unhappy at the way the issue is being handled. In a press statement read by Adimi Charles on behalf of the youth, they argued that “the clash occurred at a funeral grounds in Bukere a suburb of Bolga though extended to other communities, it never got to Daporetindongo where our brother/son was attacked. At the time Akafari was attacked, the clash had been brought under control by the security service.”

According to the youth, the Ghana Police Service which is handling the case and spearheading the investigations is delaying the process. They added that its been 3 days since their brother was brutally beaten and yet, the Police have made no arrest. The youth also want that the matter treated as a criminal case and not an incident of chieftaincy clash since their brother is not a native of the two factions engaged in the clash.

“We see it as a pure murder case and do not know why people will hide under the chieftaincy dispute to murder people. We are also surprised by the report by the Regional Police Command that our brother/son was murdered in the recent chieftaincy dispute. Our silence on the matter does not mean cowardice but rather our respect for the rule of law,” the statement added.

They further demanded that the police find the killers of their brother/son “if he died as a result of the chieftaincy dispute, we want as a family to know which gate murdered our brother/son because there are two factions involved in the clashes” they demanded.
