The New Patriotic Party in the Bolgatanga central constituency has termed as false comments made by the National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for the area to the effect that the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP Adam Mahama was not a Ghanaian.

Isaac Adongo in an attempt to refute assertions that his constituency upholds tribal politics said the late Adam Mahama was charismatic and accepted in the constituency though he was a foreigner and did not hail from the area.

Speaking on Accra-based television station TV3, Tuesday, Hon. Adongo rubbished allegations that he engaged in tribal politics ahead of the parliamentary primaries in November.

“If you talk about ethnicity in Bolga, people are over blowing it because they lost an election, Bolga has never been an ethnocentric community and Bolga respects everybody. We do have an NPP Chairman that nobody could have ever contested an election and won with him. He was never even a Ghanaian. Our big brother late Adam Mahama who would have contested him and won and yet he was not even from Bolga and he was not even a Ghanaian and he only died for Bolga people to know that he was not a Ghanaian. That is what the people of Bolga are,” he said.

But in a quick reaction to the claims, Communications Director of the party for the Bolgatanga Central constituency Awonekai Figo in a statement said the late chairman Adam Mahama’s father was Alhaji Mahama of the Kabayan family from the Upper West region while his mother was Hajia Barikisu from Sandema in the Upper East region.

According to the statement, the claims by the NDC parliamentary aspirant were uninformed and unfortunate.

In making a reference to the constitution, the statement said “the 1992 constitution defines Ghanaian citizenship as;

Article 6 (1) every person who on coming into force of the constitution is a citizen of Ghana by LAW shall continue to be a citizen of Ghana

6 (2) subject to the provisions of this constitution, a person born in or outside Ghana after the coming into force of this constitution, shall become a citizen of Ghana at the date of his birth if either of his parents is or was a citizen of Ghana.

6 (3) A child of not more than seven years of age whose parents are not known shall be presumed to be a citizen of Ghana

6 (4) A child of not more than sixteen years of age neither of whose parents is a citizen of Ghana who is adopted by a citizen of Ghana shall be a citizen of Ghana”, the statement added.

The statement further said the sala games which Isaac Adongo claimed to have been organizing is a palpable lie.

“The sala games have been in existence even at the time he (Isaac Adongo) was in Zamse Sec/Tech. School,” it noted.

The statement further accused the NDC parliamentary candidate of being the cause of division, ethnocentrism, lies and arrogance in the body politics of Bolgatanga central constituency.
