The Director of the National Patrol Department of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Obed Dzikunu has asked police personnel to avoid attitudes that have the tendency to reduce the confidence of the general public in the service.

Addressing police officers in Bolgatanga on a working visit, Thursday, Chief Supt. Dzikunu said the police exist for the public and vice versa hence the need for personnel to uphold themselves in discipline to enhance better cooperation with the public.

He reminded the officers that the police are not above the laws of the country and must therefore abide by them and work within the confines of the law. He stated that personnel who will not abide by the laws that govern their operations will be made to face the consequences of a breach.

He said the visibility unit of the Ghana Police Service was created to ensure excellence in the operations of the police to clear the public’s perception about the traditional police as corrupt. This he said calls for the need for personnel to work with high integrity to improve the police-public relationship so as to give confidence and trust to the public to volunteer information to fight crime in society.

“Some of the police stations are far from the communities and since we are not having police stations at every place, we are managing to adopt a system whereby we can deploy the police personnel to such areas so when there is an emergency, the police can respond and support members of the public. The public can also report criminal hideouts to the police to enable us bring the crime rate to the minimum level” he added.

He further called for public cooperation to support the police in their bid to fight and combat crime and advised the personnel to carry out their duties devoid of politics since that can create trouble for them and the service.

“Police is a state institution; we do not indulge in politics. So as police officers we need to double our effort to make sure we preserve the peace we are enjoying. Before we gain public confidence, it depends on the way we carry ourselves, that will enable us achieve this. And it is a keen competition that is going to happen for that matter people will not take it lightly if we those who are to make sure we provide security are indulged in politics, we are going to create problem more and we don’t want that. That is why none of them is allowed to do politics, anybody who is interested in politics should take off their uniform and go and be a politician, police we don’t do politics.”

He applauded the police in the region for carrying out their duties despite the challenges they face adding that there is the need for them to be encouraged to do more.
