Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM), a non-profit making organization operating in the Upper East region has proposed a national approach towards the protection of widows against injustice, violence and discrimination.

In living its vision of “Widows and orphans without tears” the organization over the years has been at the front of advocacy, support and the protection of widows and orphans.

There are currently about 11,000 widows registered with the Widows and Orphans’ Movement in the three northern regions who are sectioned in groups and receiving capacity building amongst others in the area of shea butter production, basket weaving, soap making and smoke sewing.

Speaking at this year’s International Widows Day in Bolgatanga, Director of WOM Abdulai Abigail Fati bemoaned the challenges that some women go through after the passing of their husbands.

She said the day was to remind the world of the poverty and injustices widows and their children suffer in Ghana and in several parts of the world adding that some widows spend their meagre resources in court seeking for properties which belong to their husbands in the first place while others were mercilessly beaten for refusing to re-marry persons from her late husband’s family.

She underscored the need for issues relating to welfare of widows to be placed high on the national agenda with a concerted sensitization and education.

“The theme for this year’s celebration dubbed Widows rights; a National Agenda is long overdue, we must admit that as a country the issues of widows are hardly out on the agenda,” she said.
