BOLGATANGA: Police Gun Down Two Suspected Robbers (SEE PHOTOS)

Police in Bolgatanga in the Upper East region have gunned down two suspected armed robbers in a shootout at Tanzui, a suburb of the municipality, Sunday night.

Bodies of the two of which one was identified as Alemna have since been deposited at the Bolgatanga hospital morgue.

DCOP Simon Afeku, Upper East Regional Police Commander disclosed in a media briefing on Monday that the police had a hint of the suspects hideout at a rocky area of Tanzui. According to him, the police at about 10 pm pursued the suspects at their hideout when they were preparing to go out for a robbery operation. On noticing the presence of the police, the suspects according to DCOP Afeku opened fire and engaed the police in a gun battle.

“Upon conveyance of the bodies or the wounded to the hospital they were declared dead by the hospital authorities,” he said.

According to him, two of the suspects with one of them believed to be a leader of the group managed to escape wielding a gun believed to be an AK47 rifle.

On the 13th of May this year, a driver of a Burkinabe Daf track was shot and killed in Bukere, a suburb of Bolgatanga. DCOP Afeku added that the two deceased and their leader are believed to be the culprits. Mr. Afeku further noted that the suspects were the brains behind a robbery attack at the Zamse Senior High School in Bolgatanga on July 1 leaving the school’s security man with gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at the Bolgatanga hospital.

Items found after the operation included 5 motor bikes believed to have been snatched from victims, 1 locally manufactured gun, a number of AK47 empty shells, a military cap and T-shirt,  4 screw drivers, 1 police whistle, flat screen television and a decoder. Other items found were a laptop, 10 mobile phones and a double egged machete.

DCOP Simon Afeku reaffirmed his outfit’s commitment to fight crime in the region.

“Let me tell the criminals especially those who are at large and those who operate within other regions and think that they can find this region as a hideout or as a safe avenue that they should take their minds off that and those who leave here and decide to perpetrate crimes within this region, we will continue to go after them.”

He appealed to the general public to report the activities of suspected criminals in their vicinity for the necessary action to be taken.
