Director General in charge of Operations at the Ghana Police Service, COP Christian Yohonu has charged police officers to deal ruthlessly with police personnel who are engaged in activities of robbery.

COP Yohonu who bemoaned what he described as shameful acts by some miscreants in the service entreated the officers to point the barrel of the gun against police officers who are engaged in armed robbery contrary to their ethics to protect lives and property.

“We are also going to deal ruthlessly with all the personnel among us who have joined the robbery gang. Point the barrel of your gun to your personnel who are armed robbers, let us deal ruthlessly with them. Let us not spare them, let us wipe them off. If you have been given this honorable uniform from your village and you are even remunerated well even better than somebody who has gone to university and with this it is not enough for you, you have opportunities and choices to travel outside to make money on peace operations instead of getting yourself involved in robbery. The barrel of the gun should be pointed against our own personnel who get themselves involved in armed robbery, we shouldn’t spare them at all” COP Christian Yohonu said.

Police Training School at Pwalugu

His warning comes on the back of recent reports of police officers who have aided some robbery operations. He made the call on behalf of the Inspector General of Police during a graduation ceremony of 165 officers who have undergone high risk operations training at the Police Public Safety Training School (PPSTS) in Pwalugu, Upper East Region.

He expressed regret that some personnel have died due to their inability to handle weapons in incidents of armed robbery and land guards shoot outs. He therefore called the attention of the police service to act swiftly to curb the menace.

Director at the police training school, ACP Victor Adusah-Poku stated that the training offered to the personnel is designed to “toughen and strengthen our operational base especially with the upcoming general elections before, during and after.”

Upper East regional commander of police, DCOP Simon Yao Afeku on his part cautioned the police officers not to go out and brutalize the citizenry but rather effect attitudinal change in the public.

The first batch of the training brought together selected police personnel from all ten regions of Ghana. Superintendent of Police, Raymond Adorfiem who was coordinator of the program led the officials to carry out a simulation of response to terrorists attack on a mall to indicate the service’s readiness to counter terrorists attack should it occur.
