Ghanaian Para Cyclist, Alem Mumuni, has said he is ready to help any Para athlete who is ready to switch nationality to benefit from their talent because the Government and Ghana has refused to realize the importance of Para athletes in the country.

This move comes on the back of neglect of three para athletes who qualified to represent Ghana at the Rio Para Lympics event early this year and although efforts are being made to get the Ministry to pay, all efforts have been futile.

To him, although other countries put their para athletes in high regard, Ghana has failed to do same and has over the years disregarded Para athletes in the country although they have made a lot of sacrifices for the country.

Speaking in an interview with a1radioonline.com, the internationally acclaimed para cyclist said “In Ghana we are treated as people who are just tolerated and not celebrated and because of that they do not see the real value of us so it is high time that talented para athletes took that step in switching to countries where their efforts will be appreciated.”

He openly declared that “I am making it open that I am ever ready to support any para athlete who is ready and willing to switch nationality just because I have worked hard to change people’s perception but the reward that I am expecting; not in monetary form but in diverse ways has not been given to me and for that matter I am ready to help talents switch nationality in order to enjoy the respect and motivation that other people in other countries enjoy.”

As to whether he was willing to switch nationality Alem mentioned that his future remains unanswered but has no intensions of switching because he has an agenda in Ghana to change the perception of people about people with disability.

Ghana’s Para Lympic team participated in the Rio Olympics without support from government although their budget was approved. Athletes were supported by funds from benevolent individuals and since their return from the competition, all efforts at getting the Ministry of Sports to pay their monies have proven futile.
