Deputy Director of Prisons, Henry Dasaah Ashly who heads prisons in the Upper East region has disclosed to a1radioonline.com that inmates at the Navrongo male prisons risk an epidemic due to the congestion at the facility.

According to him, the prison facility which has five cells and expected to house eighty-five individuals houses over one hundred and eighty-three inmates who have been brought there for offences including defilement, rape, and armed robbery.

“The prison was built for only eighty-five people but for now we are housing over one hundred and eighty people. The place is congested and if something is not done about it and there is an outbreak it will spread quickly and that will cause problems for us here.”

Apart from congestion at the facility, inmates have to struggle for the few amenities available whereas officials at the facility have improvised to ensure inmates live a quality life.

“The facility which has not seen any major renovation since it was built has inadequate toilets facilities, we don’t even have showers and they [inmates] are using buckets to bath at a very small space created for bathing.”
