The Bongo District Assembly in the Upper East region failed to elect a Presiding Member for the Assembly at an emergency meeting organised for the purpose on Friday.

The 1992 constitution of the country makes room for a Presiding Member for each District Assembly in the country to lead the Assembly in its meetings as well as the execution of other statutory works allocated to the individual by the constitution.

The election which had to go into a second round failed to produce a Presiding member for the Bongo District.

A1radioonline.com’s Adugbire Cletus who attended the emergency meeting reported that three out of the 56 Assembly members contested in the first round of the election but none of them made the two-thirds majority as stipulated by the constitution and the election, however, had to go into a second round.

He reported that in the second round, one of the contestants, Hon. Joseph Anaa Akansale withdrew from the race but after the second voting process, Hon. Duke Anaaba and Hon. Adendaa Andrew made 27 and 24 votes respectively although one needed 37 votes to carry the day.

The election has been postponed to a date yet to be communicated.

This is however not the first time a District in the Upper East region has failed to elect a Presiding Member for their Assembly. Last year prior to the election, Navrongo did not have a presiding officer because the individuals contesting for the position could not make the required number of votes.
