IWAH&P DISTRIBUTES BOOKS TO SELECTED SCHOOLS IN BOLGATANGA MUNICIPALITY

A women’s group operating as a Non-Governmental Organization in the Upper East region of Ghana, by name Indigenous Women Against Hunger and Poverty (IWAH&P), has distributed novels and other reading materials to some selected schools in the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East Region.

The distribution of the books was witnessed by students and teachers from the selected schools.

The Executive Director of IWAH&P, Madam Rosemary Akolaa said the initiative was born out of the idea to improve on students’ proficiency in speaking English and reading. She said it has been her dream to establish a library in honour of her late father.

She encouraged Teachers of the beneficiary Schools to guide and allow their students to make good use of the books to help realize the objectives of IWAH&P.

Madam Rosemary Akolaa further urged students to develop the habit of reading and not feel reluctant in doing so. This, she said can help them improve their academic performance. The project, is dubbed, “Learning Improvement Project”.

She said IWAH&P will be organizing reading and mathematics competitions among schools in the region annually to help improve students’ academic performance and also prepared them for the challenges that may arise in their lives as the grow.

According to her, the books were gathered and donated by a group in the United States of America, Mother of Africa, to be shared among the selected schools.

The presentation ceremony was chaired by a retired Educationist, Robert Ajene, who lauded the organization for the initiative and called on other philanthropic organizations to also initiate programmes that will help children to improve on their reading and learning skills.

He encouraged students in the country to cultivate the habit of reading to enhance their understanding and education.

Beneficiary schools include Bogatanga Senior High School, Bongo Senior High School, Zuarungu Senior High School, Kandiga Community Senior High School, Kongo Senior High School, Gowrie Senior High School and Zamse Senior High-Technical School. Others are Christ the King JHS/Primary, Atampuurum JHS/Primary, Naaga JHS, Gambigo JHS/Primary, Soe Primary, T.I Ahmadiyya JHS, Doba JHS/Primary, Bugre JHS and Binduri Junior High School.
