Police Service is the most corrupt institution in U/E – Report

A Survey Report on Citizens’ knowledge, perceptions and experiences of corruption in the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East Region, has revealed that the Ghana Police Service, Political Parties, Ghana Education Service are the institutions perceived to be the most corrupt in the regional capital.

Others are the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Survey, conducted by SEND-GHANA with support from USAID revealed the police service tops the list in the municipality with 90.7% of respondents who all view the police as corrupt, followed by political parties which 89.1% perceive them as corrupt.
The Survey was presented to stakeholders Wednesday at a District Policy Dialogue in Bolgatanga.

The Survey further revealed that 28% of the respondents have trust in Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to be able to fight corruption while CHRAJ, the institution mandated to fight corruption is trusted by only 9.3% of the sampled residents with 17% having trust in the Media to help fight corruption.
Quizzed on why they paid bribes, 42% of the respondents said they could not recollect why they paid bribes. Another 21% of the respondents failed to disclose reasons for paying bribes while 18% paid bribe to avoid problems with authorities.

In an interview with TopNews Ghana, the Upper East Regional Coordinator for SEND-Ghana, Gregory Titigah, said the Survey was not meant to paint any institution black but to help all Ghanaians accept that there was corruption and there was the need to speak against it at all times and levels for change.

The Survey was carried out in 50 assemblies across the country. In the Upper East Region, the Survey was conducted in the Bolgatanga Municipal, Kassena-Nankana, Bawku, Kassena-Nankana West and Bawku West Municipal and District assemblies.
