The Secretary of the Tricycle riders association in the Upper East region, Salifu Yahaya Baba has appealed to the REGSEC to have a rethink of their decision to ban tricycles from operating from 7:00 pm.

The Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has banned the operations of all motorized tricycles also known as ‘Mahama Camboo’ in the Bolgatanga municipality from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am with effect from Friday, May 26, 2017.

The ban on their operations according to the REGSEC is due to the fact that some riders of the tricycles ride with impunity and also under-aged boys ride the tricycles.

But speaking in an interview on A1 Radio’s Christopher Asima, Salifu Yahaya Baba indicated that the ban will not only affect commuters and traders at night but will also increase the number of the already choked unemployed youth in the region.

He noted that the use of the tricycles has reduced the number of crimes in the region which hitherto rose to an astronomical height.

“You see my brother before the tricycles came, the rate of crimes was very high but when these motors came, we can see that crime has decreased so this ban by the REGSEC is not a good decision because it will affect the daily bread of we the riders.”

Salifu Yahaya Baba noted that although Ghana’s constitution frowns on the use of tricycles for commercial purposes, it is imperative that the laws will be amended in order to make their operations legal.

Meanwhile some traders who use these vehicles to aid them move swiftly have decried the move by the REGSEC because it will affect productivity in the region.

“The move by the REGSEC is not good for productivity because our movement will be restricted and will not be swift like it used to. These tricycles have helped us move easily even at night so the people up there should consider changing the decision to help us too.”
