Name and Shame Corrupt Officials-Accountants Charged

In order to help retain the sinking image Ghana is suffering as a result of corruption, accountants have been charged to name and shame corrupt officials in both public and the private sector.

Accountants are also advised to guard against all kinds of abuses that can lead to corporate scandals and financial crisis that threaten corporate relationships.

President of Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), Christian Sottie gave these obligations to its members in a speech read on his behalf by Acting Chief Executive Officer of ICAG, Augustine Addo during the inauguration of Bolgatanga district society of the institute held in the Upper East Region.

As a way of protecting the public basket accountants are admonished to ensure transparency and accountability while stepping beyond financial reporting but to promote integrity in their service.

He stated that Ghanaians have engaged in acts of immorality which has worsened the financial situation the country has witnessed.  It is against this backdrop that he entreated government organizations and the public to eschew acts of corrupt practices and nepotism in order to help move the country forward.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana is a body charged with the responsibility for the regulation of the accountancy profession in Ghana. Members of the institute are the only persons recognized under its laws to audit and express opinion on financial statements of both public and private corporations.

Bolgatanga district society chairman of the institute, Adongo Joseph in his welcome address bemoaned the difficulty accountancy students go through in become members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana.

However, accountancy students located in the Upper East region according to Mr. Adongo face more difficulty in passing the chartered accountants exams simply because the region lacks tutors, academic facilities and mentors to inspire them to become members of the institute. He added that some of the students “after going through this harsh environment to qualify as an accountants they are still there without jobs.”

Upper East Regional minister, Rockson Bukari emphatically stated that the Nana Addo led government is leaving no stone unturned in the fight against corruption in the country. Mr. Bukari stated government’s commitment in setting up the office of a special prosecutor to deal ruthlessly with persons found culpable of financial misappropriation.
