600 women from Kpikpira, Gagbire and Woriyanga all in the Garu-Tempane district of the Upper East region have received skills to enable them process shea nuts into butter.
The women have also been trained into the production of soap, pomade, bathing gels, ‘batik tie and dye’ and other local products for local consumption and export.
The project is funded by World Vision Korea and implemented by World Vision Garu Area program and its partners towards empowering women economically in order to fight poverty.
This was made known by Bugri Rexford Yamdorg, Bawku Cluster Program Manager of World Vision Ghana at an exhibition ceremony to showcase the project’s gains made through its three year period.
According to Mr. Bugri, the realization of the project has brought to live two shea butter processing centers with facilities established in two communities while an auxiliary of a factory will roll out this year in the third community.
He used the occasion to make known some successes achieved by World Vision since its existence in the district.
“We have since partnered with the [Garu-Tempane] district assembly and its decentralized departments, community based organizations, faith based organizations in the sector of water, sanitation and hygiene, in the sector of food security and livelihood, in the sector of child sponsorship and child protection and also in the area of birth registration”
District Chief Executive of Garu-Tempane, Emmanuel Asore Avaka commended World Vision for the enormous support provided to the district. While pledging his unflinching support towards the sustainability of the project, Mr. Avaka stated that the shea butter processing project adds value to government’s impending ‘one district-one factory’ policy.
Some of the beneficiary women in an exclusive interview with A1 radio said the World Vision support has reshaped their financial position in order to contribute in the household and community level.
