The chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Mr. Bernard Mornah has said that Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Rev. Professor Mike Oquaye is ignorant of Ghana’s historical facts.

This follows a lecture organized by the New Patriotic Party in collaboration with the Government of Ghana to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) via the Ghana 60 Years on Planning committee “to make this commemoration, a momentous one.”

The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, stated at the lecture that Dr Kwame Nkrumah cannot be credited to be the sole founding father of Ghana since the struggles for independence was started by other prominent Ghanaians.

He said the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) leaders fashioned the independence struggle and Dr Nkrumah came later through the invitation of UGCC leaders, “and added significantly to the struggle”.

Delivering a lecture on the 70th anniversary of the formation of the UGCC in Accra last Friday night, Prof. Oquaye said to say that Dr Nkrumah was the only founding father of Ghana is not true, but rather, “I consider him one of the founder fathers.”

This Mr. Bernard Mornah describes as untrue and misleading historical facts.

He, however, added that J.B. Danquah’s political achievement can never be compared to that of Dr Nkrumah, and that successive presidents of the country have made remarkable achievements than Mr. J.B. Danquah.

“For the record, President Kuffuor’s achievement for the NPP tradition is bigger than Danquah. For the record, what Nana Addo has achieved in his life is far bigger than what Danquah achieved. Danquah never won any elections; he never won an election as a Member of Parliament. He never led any political party neither did he hold any position. To come and use a day of this magnitude to eulogise a man’s whose significance if conceptualized will come to nothing is a worry. They just wanted to belittle Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”

He questioned if the UGCC won independence for Ghana saying “It was the CPP which won elections for us. What they are saying is at the Dr. Nkrumah was not around when UGCC was been formed. At the time of creation was Jesus Christ there? Abraham and co started before Jesus Christ came but now when we talk about religion, Jesus Christ is paramount  in whatever we talk about so what are they saying?”
