The overlord of the Bongo traditional area, Naba Baba Salifu Leyaarum has advised royals who seek chieftaincy titles and the public not to resort to the use of arms to determine those who become chiefs in their traditional areas.
Calling on traditional leaders to engage in positive discussions to resolve chieftaincy related issues, Naba Lemyaarum, urged the public to avoid taking arms in deciding who becomes a chief in an area.
Some traditional areas in the Upper East region have witnessed chieftaincy disturbances resulting in loss of lives and destruction of properties.
Some traditional areas in the region because of chieftaincy issues until now have no recognized chiefs due to the failure of traditional leaders to follow due process in selecting a successor.
Stating the destruction as a result of conflicts, Naba Lemyaarum during his 11th anniversary of his stool which coincided with his 60th birthday advised the public not to engage in diabolic ways to become traditional rulers in their areas.
“Conflicts is not the best to witness in a community. Let us address our differences by confrontations, discussions that would lead to amicable solutions than for us to think that we can take arms to solve any problem. There is no need for anybody to think that I must be a chief at all cost and so if I am not then I should take arms”.
Naba Salifu Lemyaarum is noted for his efforts at reducing teenage pregnancy in the Bongo district. Tree planting to combat desertification is another area the chief has spearheaded since his assumption as overlord of the Bongo traditional area.
At a colorful event at his palace and graced by religious leaders, political leaders, heads of departments, family members as well friends around and abroad, Naba Baba Salifu Lemyaarum used the occasion to thank God for his protection all this years.
The Upper East regional minister, Rockson Bukari commended the chief for his effot at reducing poverty in the district and the region at large while maintaining peace and order in the area.
