5 motorbikes, a tricycle, a pumping machine used by the operators and other items were confiscated in a joint security operation.

Some of the ‘galamseyers’ took to their heels when the security apparatus making up of the police, military, immigration and prisons services as well as officials of Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) invaded the mining sites.

Addressing the media before the start of the exercise to fish out all illegal miners in the municipality, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kassena Nankana, Williams Aduum said the exercise is in line with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision to flush out entirely illegal miners in the country.

Illegal gold mining according to the MCE is “eating into the region and for that matter the municipality” hence the need to clampdown their operations.

Mr. Aduum indicated that he is worried that despite an earlier operation that led to the confiscation of machines belonging to the illegal miners, the ‘galamseyers’ did not stop from further diminishing the environment.
“We thought that was all but information that we have gathered again indicates that they are back to the same site so there is the need for us to go there and flush them out”.
The MCE pledged to end illegal mining in the municipality in order to reclaim the wanton destruction of farmlands, pollution of water bodies and degrading of the environment as a result of the menace.

Addressing the media and the joint security task force after the exercise, Assistant Coordinating Director of the assembly, Dramani Imurana thanked the security services in their effort to end illegal gold mining in the municipality.
“We want this operation to set as a deterrent to all ‘galamsey’ operators in the area. We are hoping that we will go back again and make sure that until all the people leave the area, we will not stop the operation”.

The 2 arrested suspected illegal gold miners were put behind bars at the Navrongo Municipal police station pending investigation.
