U/E: Regional Education Director stops moves to implement common exams in basic schools

The Upper East Regional Directorate of Education has shot down a decision by the Bolgatanga Municipal Education Directorate to conduct a common promotion exam for all Basic schools in the municipality.

A letter signed by Mrs. Jane to all education directors in the region indicated that “We wish to state emphatically that no directorate of education in the region should collect any money from Heads of Basic schools to conduct promotion and termly examinations”.

The letter said the management of the education directorate at Headquarters is worried about the attempts to implement such decisions and hence directed the various education directors to set up a monitoring team to ensure that all exams are conducted according to the rules and regulations of the Ghana Education Service.

Some teachers in the Bolgatanga Municipality strongly opposed a move by the Municipal Director of Education and the exams officer to force the various basic schools in the Municipality to undertake a common exams.

The teachers indicated that it was an insult to their intelligence and were even worried because the Municipal Director failed to consult them on the move before going ahead to implement it.

They said although their headmasters were not in favour of the decision, they could not voice it out for fear of been victimized.
