Egypt and Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah has won the BBC’s African Footballer of the year award after beating Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Naby Keita.

Salah takes over from Riyadh Mahrez, who won the accolade last year.

Speaking to the BBC after taking the award, Salah said “It’s always a special feeling when you win something. I feel like I had a great year, so I’m very happy”.

Salah has been very influential this year, helping Egypt to qualify for the World Cup and also playing key roles in the success of Liverpool.

The BBC African Footballer of the Year award is an initiative by the British Broadcaster to award the best in African football every year. It runs parallel to CAF’s own African Footballer of the Year award but its format depends exclusively on votes by fans.
