The National Service Scheme has indicated that after a broad consultation with stakeholders, the insurance policy which previously was mandatory has now been made optional for personnel who are interested.
The National Service Scheme after announcing the move to enroll all service personnel on an insurance policy faced massive opposition with personnel arguing that they were not consulted prior to the introduction of the policy.
Some personnel who indicated that they had not begged the scheme to insure them took the matter to court to prevent the Scheme from making its monthly deductions.
But in a statement from the Scheme, the mandatory insurance has now been made optional for only personnel who wish to be enrolled.
The statement indicated that the management has decided to suspend the monthly deduction of GHC 15.
