Residents of Bugri in the Garu-Tempane district are threatening to embark on a massive demonstration if district capital of an impending Tempane district is not sited in Bugri area.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in November this year announced plans to create the Tempane district out of the present Garu-Tempane district.

While welcoming the news, Bugri Concerned Citizens during a press conference called on the president to site the district capital of the impending district in Bugri traditional area.

Michael Awimbilla who read a statement on behalf of the chiefs and people of the area said Bugri traditional area forms the most central point in the Tempane constituency, hence the proposal to site the district capital there.

“The proposal to site the capital of the new district in Bugri traditional area is based on a number of factors which include; the comparative geographical areas/land mass, revenue in terms of market tolls and the central position of Bugri relative to the other towns within the proposed new district”

The proposal which also captured areas such as security, economic viability, health, education and social infrastructure went further to state that “the markets in the Bugri traditional area together rakes in a total amount of Eleven thousand, one hundred and fifty-six Ghana cedis (11,156.00), that is %69 of revenue generated in the Tempane constituency”

An assembly member of Karateshie electoral area and a convener, Sampson Asaana the electoral commission in the district earlier announced plans to have a consultative meeting with stakeholders and opinion leaders in the Bugri traditional area, unfortunately such decision never materialized.

“When we contacted the EC all that they told us is that they don’t have funding to organized the meeting. Our MP [Lawyer Dindiok Kpemka] on the other hand keep on referring us to the regional level. So we suspects there are attempts to sabotage us in locating the district capital out of Bugri traditional area”

All 22 chiefs together with assembly members from Bugri traditional council in a petition resolved to boycott assembly proceedings of the yet to be created district capital if the president fails to heed to their concerns.

“We have 10 elected assembly men and women and a total of 17; can you imagine if they boycott the assembly, how can the assembly function?” Mr. Awimbilla questioned.

The residents further threatened to hit the streets if what is due them is denied them.

“We have asked every one of our traditional leaders to go back and hold a similar meeting and sensitize the youth and in the event of the denial for the district, there is going to be a massive, massive demonstration across the Bugri Traditional Area” Mr. Awimbilla spoke on behalf of the people of the area
