Health officials in the Upper East Region have announced their readiness to curb the spread of Cerebrum Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in Senior High Schools and among the general public.

Dr. Winfred Ofosu, Regional Director of Health Services in an interview with A1radioonline said all health facilities in the region are stocked with logistics and kits to diagnose cases for treatment.

“Because the region is on the meningitis belt, we are always ready for it…As far as diagnosing meningitis, treating meningitis cases are concern, we are prepared as health facilities”

Some Senior High Schools in the country recorded cases of meningitis with students losing their lives due to the disease. In the Upper East Region, a student of Bawku Senior High/Technical Institute on Wednesday died of the disease.

A1radioonline checks at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital can confirm that another student from the Tempane Senior High School is on admission due to what health officials suspect is meningitis.

In order to prevent widespread of the disease, Dr. Ofosu tells A1radioonline a sensitization exercise is ongoing to educate the public on the disease.

“We want to use this medium to call on the public that, when they feel unwell, they should call at the hospitals and they should avoid self-medication, because, self-medication will result in wasting time in the house and by the time they finally end up at the health facility, it would have been too late”
