Azongo Albert is the RTP RADIO PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR, NORTHERN SECTOR OF GHANA 2014 and a graduate of the African University College of Communications with a Degree in Strategic Communication. The journey to being a radio personality of high repute has not been a rollercoaster ride for him as he most often recounts the moments when he was tempted to hang away the desire of being a radio personality. While in Senior High School at St. Charles minor seminary in Tamale, he was noted for a notoriety of possessing and listening to radio in school though it was forbidden. Little did he know that those were symptoms of a passion for his current career.
In 2006, an opportunity to attach to the late Maurice Mega at Radio Justice in Tamale offered him the leverage to understudy the basic of on-air ethics. His little role as a “studio rat” was highly appreciated by his bosses and this brought forth an opportunity to host a late night show for some few months.
In 2007, Azongo moved to reside in Bolgatanga and joined the now defunct Rock FM to host a midmorning radio show “Midmorning Mix”.
A subsequent return to Tamale in 2008 to host a late afternoon Drive show dubbed “Metropolitan Mix” marked a ground breaking opportunity to emboss his name on the hearts of many in Tamale as he exuded a high level of distinction in versatility and language control.
A rather fascinating move to GBC-Ura Radio in Bolgatanga in 2010 came as a surprise to many of his fans in Tamale especially at a time when “Dj Stone” as he was affectionately called became a household name in the capital of the northern region.
After close to a year of consuming the “GBC experience” he was engaged by a newly started community based radio Word FM in Zuarungu in 2011 and that opened a new chapter in his chosen career. A late afternoon Drive Show dubbed “Word Drive Xpress” became arguably the most engaging and thrilling radio show that brought listeners a refreshing experience of relevant radio for discerning listening. Until his exit from Word FM in 2013, he held the position of General Manager of the station.
While pursuing a degree program at the African University College of Communication, a relationship with A1 Radio was ignited and has lasted until now.
A new rendition of morning radio in the upper east region is felt with Azongo Albert holding the ford every morning on A1 Radio’s flagship program dubbed “Day Break Upper East Show”. The socio-political oriented radio program brings to its listeners a high pedigree of interaction with News makers, duty bearers and the citizenry. He won the RTP awards for radio personality of the year northern sector of Ghana 2014 that was held at the Accra international conference center in October 2014.
His dexterity, control and friendly engagement with his listeners makes his show a great starter of a new day.
The award winning radio personality is bent on setting a new paradigm of radio broadcasting in northern Ghana and to elevate the quality of conversation that should be the bedrock of a changing trend in broadcasting.
He noted “Every single day is a new day and an opportunity to grow beyond what I offered yesterday. Setting a good standard in the future starts with what we do today. The best is yet to come.”
