Religious beliefs identified as a major challenge to family planning delivery

Religious beliefs continue to be an obstacle to the delivery of family planning in the Upper East region. Some religious bodies have forbidden its members from practicing family planning methods.

Their reason being that the practice is sinful and contrary to God’s purpose for mankind to multiply and fill the earth. Some households in the Upper East region due to sociocultural beliefs have kicked against family planning and women who are fond practicing it is beaten up by their spouse and some risk being divorce.

These bottlenecks which add up with low literacy level of couples on the importance of family planning according to health workers is a challenge to family planning delivery in the region.

The Upper East Region in the half quarter of this year recorded 12.6% family planning performance as against 18.8% recorded last year. The significant reduction is contributed to the refusal of Ghana Education Service to embrace family planning education in second circle institutions in the region.

Upper East Regional Family Planning Coordinator, Wasila Taibu revealed this during a day’s media sensitization on the importance of family planning.

The consequences of people unwillingness to adopt family planning according Mrs. Taibu has contributed to 23 maternal deaths recorded in the quarter of this year. Mrs. Taibu in a presentation outlined the importance of family planning.

The media sensitization was part of the regional’s celebration of World Population Day under the theme “family planning, healthy people for sustainable national development.”
