Members of the Bawku Municipal Assembly this afternoon voted to reject the president’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive of Bawku, Amadu Karimu. Out of twenty-eight members who voted, nineteen voted against the nominee while the remaining nine voted for him. This means Mr. Amadu could only obtain 32% of the votes, when he needed 67% to be confirmed as MCE for Bawku.

Albert Sore reports that there was heavy security presence around the Bawku Municipal Assembly premises. One needed to be accredited before gaining access to assembly building and police and army personnel were there to ensure that everyone that got into the building was properly accredited. Rigorous searches were also conducted on everyone at the entrance of the assembly hall where the voting took place before they went in.

It will be recalled that there have been some disturbances in the Bawku municipality over the last two weeks with some youth of the NDC protesting against Amadu Karimu’s nomination for the post of Municipal Chief Executive.  They claimed Mr. karimu was a ‘political flirt’ who has been hopping from one political party to another.

Last week the Upper east regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru met the youth and party executives to try and resolve issues ahead of the day of voting.

Before voting began on Monday, Alhaji Muniru pleaded with the assembly members to endorse the President’s nominee but his plea fell on deaf ears as nineteen out of twenty-eight assembly members voted against the nominee.
Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru after voting results were declared, called for restrain of the youth. He said he will continue to act as Bawku MCE while he waits for further directives from the president on the way forward.

The MCE nominee, Amadu Karimu said he was not too disappointed about the decision of the assembly members, adding that if he is given a second chance to be confirmed, he will consult the assembly members again.
