A murder suspect has escaped from his prison cell in Bongo, here in the Upper East Region where he was being held on remand. The suspect, Anyagre Atinga-Dombire alias Labista is alleged to have severally stabbed a young man by name, Ayua Atinga to death on the 20th of August, 2013 at Bongo-Soe.

According to Atiah Abonenga, a friend of the deceased and a witness to the murder, the suspect had a little confrontation with the deceased the day before the incident. According to Abonenga, his now-deceased friend reported to the suspect’s parents because they consider the suspect as their younger brother. Abonenga added that on the day of the incident, Anyagre the suspect again confronted them and asked why the deceased had gone to report him to his mother. A misunderstanding ensued thereafter and the suspect stabbed Ayua Atinga multiple times to his death.

A formal report was made at the Bongo police station the next day and the suspect was subsequently arrested after being on the run for two weeks. After being processed to appear in court on Wednesday, 18th September 2013, the suspect mysteriously escaped from his Bongo Prison cell where he was being held in custody. A family member of the deceased, Jonathan Azubilla says they suspect foul play because a Judge in Bolgatanga had ordered the police to remand the suspect at the Navrongo prisons but the police brought him to Bongo instead.

At the Bongo district magistrate court on Wednesday, Bongo district prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Nelson Zan told the court presided over by Magistrate Judge Lariba Yamusah that the suspect, Anyagre Atinga-Dombire A.K.A. Labista had escaped from his cell on the 16th of September at about 8:30pm and a search for him was being carried out. Chief Inspector Zan also told the court that, road-blocks had been mounted all over the region to ensure that the murder suspect was found and reapprehended.

The Judge was very unhappy about the development and wondered how such an incident could occur in a district police station. She however adjourned the case to the 25th of September, 2013 and tasked the police to do all they can to rearrest the suspect.

Bongo district police commander, ASP Kwame Nimo declined to speak on record but confirmed the escape of the murder suspect to A1 News. He said two police officers who were on duty on the night of the escape have been charged to produce the suspect within one week. He added that other officers are helping in the search for the suspect but the two officers who were on duty on the day the suspect escaped will definitely be punished according to laid down police regulations after they face a disciplinary panel.
