Forty-three children who until now, were partially or completely out of school and doing menial jobs on the streets of Bolgatanga have been permanently put back in school by Afrikids Ghana, a child rights centered NGO here in the Upper East Region.

Afrikids Ghana started organizing street children in Bolgatanga and giving them basic numeracy and English lessons at night. As time went on, the number of children who attended the class began to increase.

The class then became a night school meant only for street children who were willing to get an education and was named, the School of Night Rabbit.  The school of Night Rabbit registered 70 children in 2012, 27 of whom eventually stopped attending the class and run down south of the country. The remaining 43 stayed and went through a whole year of basic numeracy and literacy lessons free of charge.

Afrikids Ghana engaged volunteer teachers who prepared the 43 children at the School of Night Rabbit to go back to school fully. The children are now ready to go back to regular schools and have been passed out of the School Of Night Rabbit.

Deputy Upper east regional director of the Ghana Education Service, Francisca Ateere said schools in the region are open and ready to welcome the children back into the classrooms. She also called on parents whose children have benefitted from the School of Night Rabbit Project to be more responsible and take a keen interest in the education of the children.

The children were also given school uniforms, mathematical sets, exercise books and other educational materials to encourage them to stay in school.
