Ghana’s former Ambassador to Cuba and Information Minister under the Mills administration, John Akologu Tia, has revealed that his small body size growing up as a child coupled with the influence successful people had on him motivated him greatly to go to school and stick to his books.

According to Mr. Akologu who was guest on personality profile on Day-Break Upper East on A1 Radio, seeing people digging the gutters with muscles he was not blessed with impressed on him the urge to take a chance in education

“I used to look at my size and when i see people digging the gutters and throwing the shovels and I see their muscles, then I tell myself I can’t get these muscles to do this type of work so it’s better to stick to my books. The other one too is, growing up you are looking up to somebody or something that you aspire for. You see some people neatly dressed with their ties and going to office and they are given all the respect in the society or you find people driving this car and you say to yourself, I want to one day have this car, so how do i get it?. So you have to be serious in school”.

He said unlike other young children who could not go to school because they had to tend to the family’s cattle, his parents were peasant farmers without cattle who wanted him to be in school.

Describing growing up in the northern part of Ghana in the 1970s, Mr. Akologu said children were guided by both parents and teachers to imbibe acts of discipline and commitment which the tenets of growth as a growing child from a rural area.

On why the former Minister chose to practice journalism out of the three career targets he had set for himself as a growing man, Mr. Akologu indicated that he realized journalism could equally help project the development of his community just like any other profession hence his pursuit to join the ink fraternity when it finally dawned on him.

The former Talensi Legislator spoke with amazement as to why after touting as one of the greatest freedom fighters, President Akufo  Addo will lay back and watched as people get gagged for trying to expressing themselves.
