The Upper East Region has seen an increase in HIV/AIDS prevalence from 1.5 percent in 2011 to 2.1 percent in 2012, higher than the national prevalence rate of 1.37 percent. Experts have attributed the increase to high illiteracy rate, poverty and perennial rural-urban migration for non-existent jobs.

The issue of stigma towards persons living with HIV is another contributing factor to the high increases of HIV/AIDS prevalence in the region. This was made known during the Regional commemoration of this year’s World AIDS Day in Bolgatanga.

Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. John Koku Awonoor Williams in a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Director Health, in-Charge of Administration, Lucio Derry, called on individuals to get to know their status to prevent getting infected by the disease.

Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Syme called on the Regional Health Directorate, health workers and the media to educate the public on HIV/AIDS to help reduce the spread of the virus.

Upper East Regional branch President of the National Association of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS (NAP+), Comfort Ayamga called for an end in discrimination and stigma against persons living with HIV/AIDS
