The Deputy General Secretary of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Michael Ayuraboya, has said executives of the Teachers Unions were still in talks with government when news of the GH¢10 deduction got to them.

According to him, the association was in the process of understanding certain sections of the insurance policy, the role of government and educating members on the policy when they received letters from the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The GES had begun implementing the life insurance policy christened “GES-SIC LIFE GROUP LIFE INSURANCE PROGRAMME” – for all teachers which saw a deduction of GH¢10 from June salaries.

Initially, the policy was said to have been crafted in consultation with the Teacher Unions.

However, the Teachers Unions have kicked against the insurance policy, describing it as unlawful and needless.

Speaking on Day Break Upper East on A1 Radio Tuesday, Mr. Ayuraboya said following the suspension of the deductions after their agitations, the Teacher Unions are poised for further discussions and proper sensitization of member Teachers.

He stated after all necessities have been in place, teachers who wish to join the policy can then go ahead.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended deductions from the salaries of teachers at the pre-tertiary Level and other staff for the life insurance policy.

The policy has been suspended with immediate effect according to statement from the Public Relations Officer of GES. Plans to refund deducted monies have also been enacted.
