Women in the Upper East Region are calling for equal opportunity to be given them with the men to compete in the areas of employment, education and politics. According to them, even though they have experienced a significant attitudinal shift in the society’s mindset about women and their emancipation, there are still many issues concerning women that need to be addressed.
The women were observing the International Women’s Day in Bolgatanga on Tuesday. Upper East Regional Director for the Department of Gender, Jocelyn Adii said women play a significant role in the country and yet, they are hardly recognized in society.
Deputy Upper East regional Minister, Daniel Syme said women across the world need to have equal opportunities with the men. He mentioned that government through the First Lady’s Foundation has continued to champion the course of women and girls.
The International Women’s Day dates back to the early part of the 20th century when a group of women in the United States and United Kingdom rose and campaigned for the rights of women vote in elections.
