The General Secretary of the Sudubaba Association of Ghana and Senior lecturer at the Accra Technical University, Mohammed Ahmed Gedel is disappointed at the discrimination by some party agents against Ghanaian Fulanis in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana in its quest to compile a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections is embarking on the registration of eligible Ghanaians 18 years and above from June 30, 2020 to August 6, 2020.

But the Sudubaba Association has accused some party agents at various registration centres of denying Ghanaian fulanis to register for their voter identification cards in order to exercise their franchise come the December polls.

Speaking on A1 Radio Day Break Upper East, Mr. Gedel debunked claims that, all Fulani’s were foreigners and does not qualify to register in the ongoing exercise.

He emphasized that, majority of fulanis by virtue of birth and neutralization have become Ghanaians and have the right to register for their voter’s identification card.

“We have a lot of problems with our people whenever they go to register. Those who have the Ghana card were able to register for their voter’s ID cards but those without the Ghana card or passport are the one we need to guarantee for them and apparently we have been having challenges, whenever they guarantee for them someone will challenge them that, they are not Ghanaians.

But some of these people have been in the country for over 40-50 and you tell them that, they are not Ghanaians and yet they have the Ghana card. So when our attention is drawn that, our members are denied the right to register, we intervene to get them the card. Some of our members have denied, sacked, some even arrested and they are sacred of coming to the centres to do the registration”.

Mr. Gedel said, though his outfit was working hard to resolve the matter, it will in due course engage the Electoral Commission to find a lasting solution to it.

“We will soon be issuing a press release on the challenges our members are facing at the various registration centres across the country for the Electoral Commission to resolve”.
