National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate Professor Naana Jen Opoku-Agyemang has admonished government to ensure it trains illegal miners in the country to make their activities legal.

According to her, the issue of illegal mining and its attendant problems on the environment need to be tackle by regular training of illegal miners to engage in green mining that preserve the environment.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was speaking on GBC URA Radio in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region on her two-day working visit to the region.

“What is illegal is illegal, what we need to do is to make it legal. Let’s find a way of harnessing their training to make them legal. Assuming you gave them the training on how to mine without degrading the environment, I think we need to train them, rising levels of responsibility on the environment.

We are not the only country that does mining, Australia is one country that does huge mining. And they have  laws on mining and training that help people do proper mining and we (Ghana) can do the same”.
