Ghana Standard Authority Introduces Ghana Assessment Program to Rid the Local Market Of Substandard Goods

Ghana Standards Authority has introduced the Ghana Conformity Assessment Program to help rid the local market of substandard goods and ease clearance of goods from the various ports in the country.

The Ghana Conformity Assessment Program (GCAP) is designed to ensure that specific products meet the requirements of relevant standards or technical regulation and will ensure that products with specific safety or health implications will be raised to a higher level which will measure up to international standards.

At an event held at the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council in Bolgatanga to launch the program, Head of the Department Of Food And Agriculture at the Ghana Standards Authority, Clifford Boateng explained that the GCAP is a program will help ease clearance of goods from the port and rid the local market of substandard goods. He said it will protect the consumer’s health, promote the use of honest trade practices and protect the interest of local traders. He stated that the GCAP will ensure products are in line with international standards. The program will be operational in October.

The director of the certification division of the Ghana Standard Authority, Mustapha Tawiah Kumah said before goods are imported into the country, they will have to be certified for conformance after a review of reports following laboratory testing, physical inspection and factory audit have been done in the country of export to ensure that the products are in line with the required standards before Customs is directed to clear goods.
