A Swedish volunteer, Camilla Gustafsson last Saturday brought joy to the chiefs and people of five communities in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern region when she handed over a Junior High School block with a computer laboratory, office and store attached to them.

Hitherto, children in these communities had to often travel long distances to Pwalugu in the Upper East region to attend school.

Many children from Naamiyela, Karimenga, Gbeo, Kurugu and Kparipire all in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern Region often become school dropouts after primary six, due to the unavailability of a Junior High School there.

The few lucky ones who can afford bicycles travel to Wulugu or Pwalugu in the Upper East Region, a distance of about 12 kilometers to further their education, when they complete primary school.

However this will now become a problem of the past as a volunteer from Sweden, Camilla Gustafson has put up a Junior High School block with an attached computer laboratory, office and a store and handed it over to the five communities.

24-year old Camilla Gustafsson arrived in Karimenga in February 2013 to start her voluntary work under a Non- Governmental Organization known as the ‘Free School Project’. Handing over the school block, she called on members of the communities to take good care of it.

Kwame Atanga, an opinion leader in the area, expressed joy that their dream had finally materialized and expressed gratitude to Miss Gustafson.

Deputy Director of Education for the West Mamprusi District, Charles Midzira said the provision of the JHS block has come at the right time since the directorate had been making efforts to provide such a facility.
