The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has advised market women to always keep their iodized salt covered to prevent the iodine content from escaping.

A promoter of iodized salt consumption with UNICEF, Kingsley Amor gave the advise during a sensitization program. The sensitization program was meant to create awareness on how iodine in salt can be preserved by the market women and households.

Kingsley Amor said the number of people that consume iodized salt in Ghana is very low and warned that leaving iodized salt open allows the iodine content to escape.  For this reason, people end up consuming these salts, thinking they are iodized when in actual fact, they are not. He therefore advised that market women who sell iodized salt and even domestic consumers should keep the salts covered at all times
