Government To Rehabilitate Two Major Irrigation Dams in Upper East

Minister of Agriculture, Fiffi Kwatey has announced government’s plans to rehabilitate the Tono and Vea irrigation dams here in the Upper East Region. The two dams if rehabilitated, will transform the lives of farmers in the Region.

Mr. Kwatey made this pronouncement here Bolgatanga on Wednesday at the launch of a 19 million dollar project by the Canadian Hunger Foundation (CHF) and the Association of Church-based Development Project (ACDEP) to strengthen poor rural communities in Northern Ghana.

He said the massive rehabilitation of the irrigations dams in the region is part of major restructuring of irrigations across the country supported by the World Bank and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The CHF and ACDEP Resilient and Sustainable Livelihoods Transformation (RESULT) Project funded by the Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development aims to eradicate poverty in the three regions of the North through agriculture.

Gail Motsi, the Project Director for RESULT in Northern Ghana said the project aims to address food security by working with local agricultural experts to introduce more effective farming techniques. She added that 15,000 farming households will be supported to increase their agricultural productivity by 200 to 300 percent

On behalf of the Canadian High Commissioner, Nevin Orange, First Secretary, Development of the High Commission said Canada is committed to supporting Ghana in agriculture.
