BigBoss Fire Outbreak

One of the boys’ dormitories of the Bolgatanga Senior High School in the Upper East Region, was razed by fire late Saturday night.

The Bolgatanga Senior High School was temporarily closed down on the December 2, 2014 due to riots by some students following the death of one of their colleagues the previous day.

The fire started at the Limann House about 11pm, not too long after some members of staff and selected students of the school returned from Kintampo where they had gone for the burial of the deceased student.

But the school authorities say they cannot attribute the outbreak to arson despite existing tension between the students’ leaders and the school administration because, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Speaking to Joy News’ Correspondent Albert Sore, Senior Housemaster of the School, Thomas Awasnaab said six of the student leaders who had traveled to Kintampo for the funeral were in the dormitory at the time of fire.

Mr. Awasnaab said the burning down of the dormitory block is going to have dire consequences on teaching and learning because already, the school’s dormitories are congested.

“If we don’t get help to renovate the dormitory, we may not be able to reopen the school”, he lamented.

As at mid-day, Sunday when Joy News visited, the campus was almost deserted and there were small fires in parts of the razed dormitory.

Some of the students who reside in the burnt down dormitory rushed to the school from home to see if they could salvage some of their properties, only to find the building burnt completely to ashes.

Authorities of the School are calling for help from government and individuals, to rehabilitate the dormitory in time before schools re-open for the second term in January, 2015.
