Victory for NDC in 2024 Elections: EIU’s prediction premature – Political Analyst

An independent Political Analyst, Boakye Yiadom has said that, it is premature the prediction by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on a Political outlook between 2021 and 2025 that suggest victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.

He said, Ghanaians should wait for the Akufo Addo led Government to complete its second term before judgement. Though admitting the Covid-19 Pandemic and its related challenges on the current economy, he said it is too ‘early and premature’ to conclusively say that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win.

He said, “Almost every year party in government spends so much. They do profligate expenses which is not good for the country. But a year after the elections, the Ghanaian people would be called upon to come and bear that cost by paying more taxes. So that’s the trend we have been following. But as for last year [2020], they used major part of the money for Covid-19 even though part of it was used for the campaign. And that’s why we have been called upon this year to pay something small.”

He added, “After calling us to pay something small in terms of taxes to fill in, if they are able to manage that amount of money well, if they are able to manage the free SHS well, if they are able to organize things properly, if they are able to fix the double track system, if they are able to put up the hospitals that they promised, if they are able to build the roads, nothing will stop them [NPP] from winning the 2024 general election.”

It could be recalled that, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in its latest report on elections outlook said, it expects the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to defeat the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections.

This according to the Unit is because the NPP government has had two terms in power under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo.

However, speaking on ‘DayBreak Upper East’ programme on A1 Radio, Mr. Yiadom said, this prediction is of no ‘convincing basis’ since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government has just begun its second term, and can do well in the years ahead.
